Introduction

Welcome to 21st century warfare, soldier! Insurgency has a focus on objective capturing and reinforcement-based gameplay. In Insurgency, you will either deploy as a marine or take up arms as an insurgent. The layout of the objective areas and the amount of reinforcements available varies from battle to battle.

In Insurgency, you are either a Commander, or a follower. There is one Commander per Squad or Cell, and this person has a wide range of leadership abilities. Using the Communications Menu, Commanders can call for reinforcements, change the target objective, assign waypoints, or give orders. This Chain of Command gives the Commanders of each team ultimate responsibility for Victory or Defeat.

The team with the better leadership and execution will win, making Insurgency ideal for tactical and competitive gamers. Stick with your team-mates as you sprint from cover to cover, because your heart will be pounding when you're outnumbered and overwhelmed by an enemy force. Rise in rank by getting kills and securing objectives, which are located on your directional indicator on the top of the screen. Proceed with caution however, because you won't know if your enemy is dead until you see their corpse, and you could kill or be killed in one well-placed shot.

The Insurgency manual will ideally connect all the dots for you, the player, so that you can enjoy the game to its full potential. Please use the navigation to the right!

Things you need in order to play!

In order to play Insurgency, you need a few things first:

You cannot play Insurgency online without a Steam account. If you have a copy of Half-Life 2 (or any in HL2 game series) or Counter-Strike: Source already installed onto your PC,  then you should already have a Steam account.

Download & Installation

Insurgency will be available in the downloads section of our website. After downloading the mod, install it so that the path of your Insurgency folder is the following:

..\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\Insurgency\

IMPORTANT: Make sure your Valve and Insurgency software is up to date!

Steam, and the Source SDK game engine have periodic updates by Valve. Steam will often prompt you to tell you that there are updates to any of the programs or games. Let Steam complete all the updates first, before trying to start Insurgency. You may have to close and restart Steam, to have the updates take effect.

Insurgency will also have periodic updates. Check the official Insurgency website for any updates. Download and install any Insurgency updates from only official sources.

Gametypes

Each map basically has its own custom gametype, giving mappers complete creative control over their map's gameplay. We use 4 base gametypes, which you can see in the server browser:

Battle

Battle is a gametype focused on linear, front-line gameplay. Teams can be on the offensive or defensive, depending on their commander's tactics. Generally battle maps are quite large, and allow you to push or be pushed from one end of the map to the other. Your reinforcement location moves as your objective changes.

Push

Push is a gametype focused on linear, attack-defend based gameplay. You are either on the attacking team or the defending team. The attacking team must secure all of the objectives, one by one, in the round time, while the defenders must prevent the attacking team from doing just that. Generally push maps are also quite large, and reinforcement locations move as the momentum of the battle shifts.

Firefight

Firefight is a gametype focused on non-linear, checkpoint-based gameplay. Teams can be on the offensive or defensive, depending on their commander's tactics. Generally Firefight maps consist of smaller maps with fixed spawns, and objectives equally distant from each team's spawn. Victory is achieved by the accumulation of all of the checkpoints in the map.

Strike

Strike is a gametype focused on non-linear, "hold the fort" type gameplay. You are either on the attacking or defending team, and there are generally only a few objectives. The defending team must hold all of the objectives until the attacking team runs out of reinforcements or time. Generally Strike maps are medium/small sized and contain fixed spawns. The most typical Strike scenario I can think of would be a D-Day scenario of sorts.

Chain of Command & Commander Mode

Chain of Command is what makes Insurgency quite unique among games in its class. In Insurgency, you are either an order-giving Commander or an order-receiving soldier. Commander orders are processed through the chain of command, brought to the attention of everyone in the unit.

Units are either Squads or Cells. Squad is the terminology we use for a US Marine unit, while Cell is the terminology we use for an Insurgent unit. Each Squad/Cell consists of 8 players. The first player in a squad/cell is the commander.

The maximum server capacity is 32 players, which is 16 player teams, or 2 squads/cells per team.

Commander Mode

Calling for reinforcements is a good way to get immediate backup if needed. It takes the members of your squad that are not alive and spawns them right away.

Using the commander mode, you can change the objective your squad attacks or defends.

Commanders can issue waypoints to their squad using the commander menu.

Players in the squad are immediately shown the location of this waypoint on their HUD, so they know where their commander wants them.

Commanders can also give tactical orders to the members of their squad by using the commander mode to issue voice commands. When the voice command is given, the players in the squad will have the ability to reply to the order, reporting their status back to the commander.

Marksmanship

In Insurgency your breathing patterns impact your aim, so make sure you are in as low of a stance as possible to stabilize your weapon if you're interested in shooting as accurate as possible!

Server Basics

In order for Insurgency to run stable and without any lag we at least recommend a server with 512Mb of memory and a dedicated connection to the internet (10mbit or better). The recommended settings are 16 or 24 players with a maximum of 32 and we recommend using tickrate 66 and fps_max 500 for the best performance.

To install a Source Dedicated Server you can best read this Wiki article which explains basic installation for both Windows and Linux server installations. After this you can download the server package from the Insurgency website and make sure you place the insurgency map in the main SRCD directory (the map that also includes cstrike or dod). Then you should edit the server.cfg file which can be found in the cfg directory and includes basic options like how to set the name of the server. More explanation on that can be found here. After this you can start the server with a commandline like: srcds.exe -console -game insurgency +map ins_haditha +maxplayers 32 +ip YOURIP +port YOURPORT +fps_max 500 -tickrate 66

More information can always be found in our forums.

All server CVAR's can be found here.

Teamwork & Tactics

A good way to be guarenteed to find teammates is by looking for your squad leader. You can find your squad leader on the compass.

The commander can issue tactical orders such as "Flank left!" or "Cover fire!" The use of tactics is a great way to outsmart the enemy, and inevitably win.

Server Tips & Plugins

Keep your server as clean as possible, do not install all kinds of plugins that can cause our game to lag or creates networking problems. Therefor, for administration purposes we recommend the following tools to help you out:

Recommended Server plugins:
- SourceMod:
Through our partnership with SourceMod, we recommend using this server administration and plugin extension tool for basic admin functionality. You can also find extra extensions for SourceMod over here.
- SteamBans:
SteamBans is the nr.1 global banning list and anti-cheat community for Steam games, and we recommend this plugin for a safer gameplay.

Insurgency has been tested with these plugins and has been found stable and clean without causing any lag or network problems.

Starting up Insurgency

There are several ways to start Insurgency. We'll cover a few on this page.

1.) The normal way to start Insurgency, would be to launch Steam first.

  • If Steam is already running (icon would be near your clock/time in the Taskbar), double click the Steam icon in your Taskbar to open Steam.
  • If Steam isn't yet launched. You can usually find the Steam icon in several places. You may find the Steam icon either on your PC Desktop, Taskbar, or in your Windows Start menu. Double click on the Steam icon to launch the Steam program.

Once the Steam main menu screen is open:

  • Click on the "My games" tab [1.] in the upper part of the menu. Once the tab has opened, it will display all the Valve games you have installed onto your PC.
  • Click on Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat [2.] from the list of games installed on your PC.
  • Click the Launch button [3] to start the game.

2.) The quickest way to start Insurgency Mod, would be to double-click an Insurgency game icon from your PC Desktop or Taskbar.

If you don't have an Insurgency icon on your desktop. You can create one by opening Steam, as described above, and clicking the "My games" tab. Once you have done this, right click on Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat, then select the option to "Create Desktop Shortcut" [Pic]. This will place an Insurgency game icon shortcut on your Desktop. This will allow you to instantly launch Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat with only having to click the Insurgency icon shortcut from your desktop.

3.) If you have any Valve game installed onto your PC, but you can not find a Steam or Insurgency icon on your Desktop or Taskbar. You can go into your Windows Start menu to locate the program icons.

You should find the Steam software icon here:

Start Menu -> All Programs -> Valve -> Steam -> Steam software icon

You should find the Insurgency game icon here:

Start Menu -> All Programs -> Insurgency -> Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat game icon

After you have done any of the following to open Insurgency, you may have to wait a few minutes for the game to load and the Insurgency main menu screen to come up. It does this to check for online updates and any new information on Insurgency.

Music

Below is a picture of the music options:

Objectives & Capturing

Objectives are an area in the map defined by the mapper that act as capture points. Objectives can be either neutral, friendly-controlled, or enemy controlled. Every objective has a different alphabetical tag to go with it, such as A, B, C, D, etc. We then take these letters and convert them into military terms: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, etc.

Objectives are lettered primarily based on their location relative to the other objectives. Your first objective can be Objective Delta just as easily as it can be Objective Alpha.

To Capture an objective, you need to have enough friendly soldiers in it for it to start capturing. If you need another player to capture the objective, it looks like the following:

Once you have the appropriate amount, or excess friendly players in an objective area, you can start capturing.

"blocked" means that there is an enemy presence in the objective, and your capture is blocked

The commander has the ability to control which objective his squad should attack or defend.

Reinforcement Waves

The way that Insurgency respawns players into the battlefield is with Reinforcement Waves. Reinforcement waves are a collection of spectating/dead players that pool together and respawn together after a given amount of time. Reinforcement waves are generated only when there is someone in the reinforcement pool.

The amount of waves your team has is determined by the map's configuration file. In one map, you may have unlimited reinforcements (ala Day of Defeat), while in another map, you may have no reinforcements (ala Counter-Strike). The amount of waves your team has is displayed on the header of the compass:

The commander has the ability to call for an emergency deployment of a reinforcement wave if given that ability by Headquarters (map-specific). The following Commander HUD indicator represents the amount of remaining emergency deployments:

Weapons & Ammo

There are no crosshairs in Insurgency. You can fire without iron sights all you want, and the bullets will go where your weapon's pointing, but you won't have any additional help.

Iron sights are a great way to improve your marksmanship and are imperative for survival on the INS battlefield.

Some weapons come with alternative rates of fire, so make sure you know what button you have assigned to "Change Firemode." Below is a demonstration of the HUD change from Semi-Automatic to Automatic:

For weapons with Bipods, you can deploy on physical surfaces and the ground. This is a great way to stabilize your weapon if you have the ability to set up in a defensive position.

Once deployed, you can go into iron sights for even further stabilized firing

Your mags remaining is only shown when you need to know it.. like when you're reloading, or draw a weapon.

Ammo Boxes are a great way to re-arm on the battlefield! In the future, you'll be able to trade in your weapon for other weapons and ammo with these, but for now their function is quite simple, allowing players to re-arm on the battlefield if necessary.

Staying Alive

Follow your commander's orders! Wandering around the deadly Iraqi streets by yourself is not a smart idea!

Use your iron sights! The "run and gun" player will not last very long!

Cover to cover! Sprinting between physical cover is a good way to avoid being killed.

Machine gun cover fire is a great way to suppress the enemy! Machine guns are quite deadly in Insurgency, and if caught in the open, can bring you certain death.

Make good use of smoke grenades and frag grenades! Smoke grenades will provide cover for an advance, and fragmentation grenades are a great means of taking out enemy positions and stopping enemy advances.

Be careful! You can die in just 1 shot if your enemy is skilled enough!
